The Toyota Yaris (Japanese: ??? ????, Toyota Yarisu) is a subcompact car sold by Toyota since 1999, replacing the Starlet.
Between 1999 and 2005, some markets received the same vehicles under the Toyota Echo name. Toyota has used the "Yaris" and "Echo" names on the export version of several different Japanese-market models. From 2015, most Yaris sedan models marketed in North America are based on the Mazda2 and produced for Toyota by Mazda.
The name "Yaris" is derived from "Charis", the singular form of Charites, the Greek goddesses of charm and beauty.

International
First generation (XP10; 1999-2005)
First generation models were marketed between 1999 and 2005 under the "Yaris" and "Echo" names depending on the market. Hatchback, coupe, and sedan body variants were offered.

Second generation (XP90; 2005-2013)
Second generation models have been marketed since 2005 under the "Yaris" name worldwide. Hatchback and sedan body styles were offered. The hatchback version was discontinued in late 2013 for Asian markets.

Third generation (XP130; 2011-present, XP150; 2013-present)
Third generation models have been marketed since 2011 under the "Yaris" name worldwide. Originally available only as a hatchback, a sedan body style arrived in 2013.
- Hatchback: versions derive from the Japanese-market Toyota Vitz (XP130), introduced in early 2011.

Asia and South America
Third generation (XP150; 2013-present)
Since 2013, a different version of the Yaris, based on the XP150 Vios, was launched for the Asian market - including China, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Brunei and the Philippines.
The Chinese market also released the regular XP90 Vitz-based Yaris produced locally by the GAC Toyota joint venture. China also sells the Vios-based model as the Yaris L, available in 1.3- 6NR-FE and 1.5-liter 7NR-FE versions. The facelift Yaris L was unveiled at the April 2016 Auto China. In 2016, a facelift was conducted by the GAC Toyota joint venture, and a sedan version was added based on the Toyota Vios sedan.
In Thailand, this Yaris was released in October 2013, using the 1.2-liter 3NR-FE engine, granting the Yaris as part of the "eco-car" program in Thailand. Models offered are as follows: J ECO, J, E, G and TRD Sportivo.
For the Indonesian market, the XP150 model was revealed in December 2013, and launched on 17 March 2014, with assembly at Karawang, Indonesia. This Indonesian Yaris is similar to the Thai version, thus bigger than the Yaris in other markets, and uses the 1.5-liter 1NZ-FE engine. Trim levels offered are: E, G, and TRD Sportivo with manual or automatic transmission.
The XP150 model received an update on 3 November 2016, along with an addition of crossover-like variant, the Yaris Heykers. It comes with more aggressive front and rear bumpers, over fenders, roof side ornaments, and higher but stiffer TRD springs. The updated XP150 model uses the newer 1.5-liter 2NR-FE engine from the facelifted second generation Avanza and the Indonesian-spec second generation Sienta. The Heykers variant was discontinued in January 2018.
For the Philippines market, the XP150 Yaris was launched in late 2013 and sold in two trim levels: the 1.3 E and the 1.5 G.
The same model is marketed as the Yaris Sport in Chile since 2014, and in Mexico and Argentina from 2016, where it is imported from Thailand. In Chile and Mexico, it replaced the XP130 Vitz-based Yaris hatchback.
Yaris ATIV
The Yaris ATIV sedan was launched in Thailand on 15 August 2017, using the same 1.2L engine as the Thai market XP150 model Yaris hatchback, with updated bodywork (later used in the facelifted regular Yaris). The Yaris ATIV is positioned below the Vios in its sedan lineup.
Models offered are as follows: J ECO, J, E, G and S. The ATIV is based on the XP150 Vios but with design cues from the Yaris hatchback.
It was launched in Singapore on 14 December 2017 with the Vios naming instead of Yaris ATIV naming, albeit with a larger, more powerful 1.5L 2NR-FE engine. It is available in E and G grades. It was also unveiled in India as the Yaris sedan on 7 February 2018 at the Auto Expo 2018. For the Indonesian market, the Yaris ATIV is sold as the Vios and was launched on 3 April 2018. The Indonesian market Yaris ATIV-based Vios is assembled at Karawang plant. In Brunei, it launched the facelifted Vios based Yaris ATIV on May 2018, following the facelifted Yaris Hatchback.
Facelift
The facelifted XP150 model Yaris hatchback was launched in Thailand on 14 September 2017. The car uses the same front fascia as the Yaris ATIV sedan, with the taillights inspired by the second generation Auris. Models offered are as follows: J ECO, J, E and G.
While the facelifted Yaris hatchback and Yaris ATIV sedan/-based Vios is slightly more differentiated styling, but still more obviously similar like its European-made Aygo. By based on the Peugeot 107/108 and Citroën C1.
The facelifted Yaris hatchback was also launched in South Africa on 8 February 2018. For the first time, the Yaris hatchback for the South African market is imported from Thailand. It replaced the XP130 Vitz-based Yaris hatchback. Model offered are as follows: XI, XS, CROSS, XS CVT and SPORT.
The facelifted Yaris hatchback was also launched in Indonesia on 20 February 2018. It is assembled at Karawang plant. Trim levels offered are: E, G, and TRD Sportivo with manual or automatic transmission (CVT).
The facelifted Yaris hatchback was also launched in the Philippines on 20 December 2017 and sold in two trim levels: the 1.3 E and the 1.5 S.
Bruneian Yaris was included daytime running lights (DRLs), smart entry with push start button, the automated air Conditioner with climate control, and the Optitron LCD speedometer, seven SRS airbags for both driver and passenger, hill-start assist (HSA). The Yaris is only produced in Indonesia only and launched in 26th May 2018 (following the facelifted Vios based Yaris ATIV).
North American models, 2011-present
Starting with 2012 models introduced in late 2011, only the hatchback (XP130) has been sold in the United States, with no version of the sedan (XP150) being offered. Similarly, Toyota stated in late 2011 that the sedan (XP150) would not be sold in Canada, as they were "evaluating that model's future" due to lackluster sales of previous sedans.
Production of all U.S. and Canadian Yaris (XP130) models shifted from Japan to Toyota Motor Manufacturing France starting in May 2013.
The Vios (XP150) was introduced in Mexico in 2013 as the Yaris Sedán. In early 2018, a version of the Asian-market Yaris ATIV replaced the Vios (XP150) in Mexico, being marketed under the Yaris Sedán name alongside the more upmarket and costlier Mazda2-based Yaris R.
Scion iA, Toyota Yaris R and Toyota Yaris iA (DJ; 2015-present)
In 2014, Mazda de México Vehicle Operation began production of the Mazda2 in Salamanca, Guanajuato for various North and South American markets. At the 2015 New York International Auto Show in April of that year, it was announced that this plant would produce a version of the Mazda2 for Toyota with minor styling changes, with the vehicle to be sold in Mexico as the Yaris, in the United States as the Scion iA, and in Canada as the Yaris sedan. In July 2015, Toyota confirmed that the car would be sold in Mexico as the Yaris R.
After the phase-out of the Scion marque in the United States, the car was renamed as the Toyota Yaris iA from October 2016 for the 2017 model year. For the 2019 model year, it will be renamed again as the Yaris sedan in the U.S., and will receive a minor facelift with a new grille insert and trim changes. Unlike the previous models, which offered only exterior colors and a choice between 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions as factory options, both the U.S. and Canadian 2019 Yaris sedans will be offered in L, LE, and XLE trims with a wider variety of interior and exterior options.
